Reggae Covers: Bob Marley & the Wailers – What’s New Pussycat? (Tom Jones/Bachrach & David)

Posted on

Welshman Tom Jones‘ 1965 hit ‘What’s New Pussycat,’ penned by the esteemed songwriting team of Burt Bachrach & whomever (in this case Hal David), quickly found favor with music fans in the US & UK. Later the same year a little-known reggae outfit from Jamaica released a cover of the tune, imbued with ‘the skank‘ for rhythmically-advanced island ears. The result is not entirely inspired, but as always a pleasant novelty.

Pussycat, Pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat nose!
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
