Denise Levertov – Grey Sparrow Addresses the Mind’s Ear

Posted on Updated on

Denise Levertov

Levertov, who commingled natural and spiritual thematics with career-defining regularity, here approaches the ineffable singularity of experience.

In the Japanese
tongue of the
mind’s eye one
two syllable word
tells of
the fringe of rain
clinging to the eaves
and of the grey-green
fronds of wild parsley.

– Denise Levertov

For some reason…for some godawful reason…the impenetrability of language calls this scene from Ringo Starr’s film ‘Caveman’ to mind. ‘Uul’ is the universal language.

I remember when her name was heard as often as Dylan’s and her poems were as pervasive as the music of the Grateful Dead.
