Reverend Gary Davis – You Got To Go Down

Posted on Updated on

South Carolina’s Reverend Gary Davis –a blues singer & picker of great renown– was a great influence on such later luminaries (and frequent visitors to these pages) as Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Jorma Kaukonen, and the Grateful Dead. Here’s a lesson in Old-Time Bible living.

Spoken: Some of you people don’t realize it. Taking the world by storm. Don’t even know hoe to treat your family. Doing all kind of ways. Living all kind of lives. Saying everything before your children. Treat your wife all kind of ways. Treat your husband every kind of way. God says:

You better learn how to treat your husband
You got to go down, you got to go down
You better learn how to treat your husband
You got to go down, you got to go down
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
The life you’re living won’t do to trust
You better learn how to treat your husband
You got to go down

Gary Davis was living in NYC at the time David Bromberg was supposed to be going to Columbia. Somehow the two of them met in some basket house in Greenwich Village and struck up a conversation. Being blind, Davis frequently required assistance to perform day to day tasks. Bromberg volunteered and the two became fast friends. Bromberg credits the Reverend Gary Davis as his most important musical mentor and guitar teacher.

‘supposed to be going to Columbia’

      Sounds strikingly familiar.
