Sonny Boy Williamson – Help Me

Posted on Updated on

When I walk, walk with me / When I talk, you talk to me
Oh baby… I can’t do it all by myself
You know if you don’t help me darling
I’ll have to find myself somebody else

The tune that got me hooked on playing the Harp, more than 20 years ago…

If you had to pick a harp player and you had to pick a song, this is how it’s done. On another listening I can see how/why this would be a great track to learn on/from. There’s a good mix of ‘rhythm and lead’ in the harp chart for this tune: plenty of opportunities to show both repeatability and your best flashy figures. Glad you found us, and glad you shared!

Yeah no kidding, the man was a genius. I eventually remembered that the first time I heard this song was a cover by Junior Wells (another giant this one) at the 1963 (?) American Folk Blues Festival on one my parent’s tapes… I still have the recording somewhere. Anyways thanks for the posting.

For sure. I’ve got lots of love for Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, Little Walter…the greats. I remember being skeptical as hell looking at the first Paul Butterfield album, thinking “White people can’t play blues…shit.” Then I heard Butters & Bloomfield and saw the light.
